Setting Up Schemas

WordPress

Adding WebPage Schema to your WordPress site using Yoast SEO is straightforward because Yoast actually handles most of this automatically.

By default, Yoast sets your Pages to the WebPage schema and your Posts to the Article schema.

However, if you need to manually force a specific page or post to be a WebPage, or if you want to change your global settings so everything is treated as a WebPage, follow the instructions below.

Method 1: Changing Schema for a Single Page/Post

  1. Use this method if you want to change the Schema type for one specific piece of content (e.g., changing a specific blog post from Article to WebPage).
  2. Edit the Page or Post: Go to your WordPress dashboard and click "Edit" on the specific page or post you want to modify.

  3. Locate the Yoast SEO Box: Scroll down to the bottom of the editor to find the Yoast SEO meta box. (If you are using the Block Editor/Gutenberg, this is also available in the right-hand sidebar under the Yoast icon).

  4. Click the "Schema" Tab: You will see tabs like SEO, Readability, and Social. Click on the Schema tab.

  5. Change the Page Type:

    • Look for the dropdown labeled Page Type.

    • Select Web Page from the list. (You will see other specific options like About Page, Contact Page, Item Page, etc., which are all subtypes of WebPage).

  6. Change the Article Type (If applicable):

    • If you are editing a Post, you will also see an Article Type dropdown.

    • To make it purely a WebPage without Article schema, you can set Article Type to None.

  7. Update/Publish: Click the WordPress Update or Publish button to save your changes.

Method 2: Changing Global Defaults (All Posts or Pages)

Use this method if you want to change the default setting for all content of a certain type (e.g., if you want every single Blog Post to be marked as a WebPage instead of an Article by default).

  1. Go to Yoast Settings: In your WordPress dashboard sidebar, hover over Yoast SEO and click Settings.

  2. Access Content Types: On the left menu of the settings screen, look for the Content Types section.

  3. Select Post or Page: Click on the content type you want to change (usually Posts or Pages).

  4. Scroll to Schema Settings: Scroll down until you see the Schema section.

  5. Adjust Defaults:

    • Default Page Type: Set this to Web Page.

    • Default Article Type: If you are changing "Posts" and strictly want WebPage schema only, change this to None.

  6. Save Changes: Click the Save changes button at the bottom of the screen.

Method 3: Verification (How to check if it worked)

After you have saved your changes, you should verify that Google actually sees the WebPage schema.

  1. Copy the URL: Copy the URL of the page you just edited.

  2. Go to the Validator: Visit the Rich Results Test tool by Google or the Schema.org Validator.

  3. Run the Test: Paste your URL and run the test.

  4. Review Results: Look at the "Detected structured data" section. You should see WebPage listed there.
